Academician Savin was a pioneer in the field of space-based weapon systems. He led the development of the "Oko" (Eye) missile early warning satellite system and participated in the creation of multiple generations of spacecraft.He was the recipient of numerous state honours, including the title of Hero of Socialist Labour and the Lenin Prize.

He serves as President of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and was elected a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017.
