Detailed Biography
Professor Helmberger earned his PhD in Geophysics from UC San Diego. After appointments at MIT and Princeton, he joined Caltech in 1970, later serving as Director of its Seismological Laboratory (1998–2003). He pioneered quantitative waveform modelling for earthquakes, nuclear tests, and Earth structure. His discoveries include space‑time faulting models, mantle discontinuities, ultra‑low velocity zones at the core‑mantle boundary, and tectonic release from nuclear explosions. He received the inaugural AGU Lehmann Medal (1997) and was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (2004). Known for his modesty and generosity, he is remembered as a giant of seismic waveform modelling.
