Detailed Biography
Professor Evans earned his PhD in Geophysics from the University of Cambridge, following studies in Pure Mathematics at King’s College, Cambridge, and an MSc at the University of Warwick. After early research at the Carnegie Institution in Washington, D.C., he joined BGS Edinburgh in 1978. He pioneered studies on shear-wave splitting as a possible earthquake precursor in Turkey and later led BGS’s Regional Geophysics group, integrating magnetic, gravity, and seismic data to advance the understanding of UK geology, both onshore and offshore. From 2000, he managed over 100 scientists across geophysics and marine geosciences. As BGS lead for EPOS, he drove the successful completion of its Preparatory Phase, building a sustainable infrastructure for European geophysical networks. He served as editor of the Geophysical Journal International (1997–2008) and actively supported the British Geophysical Association. Outside geoscience, he was a jazz keyboardist and rugby enthusiast. His legacy as a mentor, leader, and Academician continues to inspire the geophysical community.
