
Donald Vincent Helmberger was an American seismologist widely regarded as one of the most impactful seismologists to have ever lived, as noted in his obituary published in Seismological Research Letters. A memorial issue of the journal Earthquake Science was published in his honour in February 2022. He served as Head of the Caltech Seismological Laboratory from 1998 to 2003 and held the position of Smits Family Professor of Geophysics, Emeritus, at the time of his death. He was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2004.
